Before approaching the shrine, the worshippers traditionally perform a ritual purification known as temizu (purification with water \/ \u624b\u6c34), a practice that has formed an essential part of Shint\u014d (Japan\u2019s native nature religion \/ \u795e\u9053) worship for centuries.<\/p>\n                    \n\n                    \n                    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Within Shint\u014d (Japan\u2019s native nature religion \/ \u795e\u9053), purity is regarded as an important prerequisite for approaching the kami (deities \/ \u795e). The purpose of this ritual is therefore not physical cleanliness alone, but the symbolic purification of body, mind, and spirit before entering the sacred presence of the deity.<\/p>\n                    \n\n                    \n                    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">During the temizu (purification with water \/ \u624b\u6c34) ritual, the water is never drunk, but used solely for ritual purification. Likewise, water that has been used to rinse the hands or mouth should never be returned to the basin. Instead, it is allowed to flow onto the ground, symbolically carrying away impurity and leaving both the worshipper and the Ch\u014dzuya (purification well \/ \u624b\u6c34\u820e) in a state of purity.<\/p>\n                    \n\n                    \n                    <hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n                    \n\n                    \n                    <h4 class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">How to perform temizu (purification with water \/ \u624b\u6c34) at the Hokushin-Jinja:<\/h4>\n                    \n\n                    \n                    <ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n                      \n                      <li class=\"translation-block\">Approach the Ch\u014dzuya (purification well \/ \u624b\u6c34\u820e) and bow slightly towards it.<\/li>\n                      \n\n                      \n                      <li class=\"translation-block\">Take a hishaku (wooden ladle \/ \u67c4\u6753) with the right hand to draw water from the flowing water. The water within the hishaku (wooden ladle \/ \u67c4\u6753) should be enough for the whole purification ritual.<\/li>\n                      \n\n                      \n                      <li class=\"translation-block\">First, purify the left hand through rinsing it slightly with the water collected. Do so in front of the Ch\u014dzuya (purification well \/ \u624b\u6c34\u820e). Used water shall never be put back into the well.<\/li>\n                      \n\n                      \n                      <li class=\"translation-block\">Follow up with purifying the right hand in the same way, by moving the hishaku (wooden ladle \/ \u67c4\u6753) to the left hand.<\/li>\n                      \n\n                      \n                      <li class=\"translation-block\">After moving the hishaku back to the right hand, water is then poured into the left hand and used to gently rinse the mouth. The water is then spit out on the floor next to the Ch\u014dzuya (purification well \/ \u624b\u6c34\u820e). Never drink the water!<\/li>\n                      \n\n                      \n                      <li class=\"translation-block\">Afterwards, the left hand is rinsed once more before the remaining water is allowed to flow down the handle of the hishaku, thereby purifying the ladle itself.<\/li>\n                      \n\n                      \n                      <li class=\"translation-block\">Place the hishaku (wooden ladle \/ \u67c4\u6753) again on the Ch\u014dzuya (purification well \/ \u624b\u6c34\u820e). Never hand it directly to another person.<\/li>\n                      \n\n                      \n                      <li class=\"translation-block\">Take a step back and bow slightly towards the Ch\u014dzuya (purification well \/ \u624b\u6c34\u820e).
