Hokushin My\u014dken Sonj\u014d-\u014d (the Venerable Star King My\u014dken of the North Star <\/em>\/ <\/em>\u5317\u8fb0\u5999\u898b\u5c0a\u661f\u738b)<\/em>, in short often referred to as My\u014dken (<\/em>My\u014dken), <\/em>is the divine Shinbutsu-Sh\u016bg\u014d (syncretism of Shint\u014dism and Buddhism \/ <\/em>Shinbutsu Sh\u016bg\u014d)<\/em> embodiment of the North Star, known in Japan as Hokushin (North Star \/ <\/em>\u5317\u8fb0) <\/em>or Hokkyokusei (North Pole Star \/ <\/em>\u5317\u6975\u661f)<\/em>, the unmoving axis of the heavens. The worship of My\u014dken is referred to as Hokushin-Shink\u014d\n (worship of the North Star \/ <\/em>\u5317\u8fb0\u4fe1\u4ef0)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The King of Stars and the Northern Heavens<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

From ancient times, the North Star has been standing immovable in the turning heavens, a symbol of cosmic order and unwavering orientation. As its divine embodiment, My\u014dken has since more than 1,500 years ago been revered by warriors, travellers, and seekers of clarity alike, offering protection and guidance in times of conflict and uncertainty, as well as strength in battle and in moments which require decisive action.<\/span><\/p>\n

The kami (deity \/ <\/em>\u795e)<\/em> My\u014dken is also inseparably linked to the seven stars of the constellation of the Hokuto Shichisei (Big Dipper \/<\/em> \u5317\u6597\u4e03\u661f)<\/em>, whose eternal rotation around the Hokushin (North Star \/ <\/em>\u5317\u8fb0)<\/em> has been perceived as the celestial order governing time, seasons, fate, and the rhythm of life itself. From this sacred vision of the northern sky arose the concept of the Sei\u014d (King of Stars \/ <\/em>\u661f\u738b),<\/em> a title by\n which My\u014dken himself is also known. As the celestial sovereign at the center of the heavens, the North Star came to embody My\u014dken as the astral pivot around which all other stars revolve \u2014 the divine center commanding celestial order\n and maintaining harmony within the universe.<\/p>\n

My\u014dken was and still is revered in particular as a guardian kami <\/span>(deity \/ <\/span><\/em>\u795e<\/span>)<\/span><\/em> of warriors, and horses, whose lives depended upon courage, strength, and endurance on the battlefield. However, My\u014dken is also revered to as the quiet protector of farmers, whose lives depend as well, in their own way, upon courage, strength, perseverance, and enduring resolve beneath the turning sky and seasons.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the deification of the North Star, My\u014dken has also been worshipped as the divine protector of travellers, sailors, and navigators. Long before the age of maps and compasses, the North Star guided humanity through darkness and uncertainty. My\u014dken came to embody this guiding force, offering safe passage across seas, mountains, and unseen roads, thus remaining a deity to whom journeys \u2014 both physical and spiritual \u2014 are entrusted even today.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the heart of My\u014dken worship lies a simple yet profound truth: the only constant in the universe is change. In this representation, the sword does not necessarily signify aggression, but vigilance, righteous strength, and the power to stand against chaos and disaster. It further symbolizes the divine authority to overcome and cut down those forces that oppose these principles, serving as a protector of cosmic order and harmony through the sword.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the celestial embodiment of the Hokushin (North Star \/ <\/em>\u5317\u8fb0)<\/em>, My\u014dken is rarely portrayed as standing alone. At his side is his trusted guardian, steadfast mount, and unshakable ally: Genbu (the Black Warrior \/ <\/em>\u7384\u6b66)<\/em>,\n the mythical divine being and sacred guardian of the northern heavens. In traditional depictions, Genbu appears either as a mythical dragon-tortoise intertwined with a serpent, or in the shape of the fearsome Kokury\u016b (the Black Dragon of the Northern skies \/ <\/em>\u9ed2\u9f8d)<\/em>.\n Within East Asian cosmology, Genbu is one of the Four Celestial Guardians and represents the direction of North and the season of winter \u2014 realms associated with stillness, endurance, hidden strength, and profound depth.<\/p>\n
